If you put aside the perversion to make someone work this hard to answer, “what did you stream this weekend?” and start referring to the series as “The Woman in the House” maybe we can take this conversation forward.

Quite by coincidence I watched two films on similar topics but with vastly different treatments. Both have been on my must-watch list for longer than a year and I ended up watching them over the same weekend.

All of the times I’ve watched Guru Dutt’s magnificent film Pyaasa (1957) it has moved me to tears. To watch Vijay, the protagonist, struggle to make any progress with his obvious talent, to see the courage of Gulabo who puts her far greater problems aside to help someone else, to see the faithfulness of Abdul who never deserts his friend, these are all things that squeeze my heart out.
Movies have always been the favorite pass time for majority of people. There are different and interesting kind of stories in all our Indian Languages. No matter which language or what the story, there is always something that makes a movie unique. A movie can be unique for being the most boring one too, if you get what I mean. You go to the theatre with all the hopes to enjoy a great movie, but then the movie just puts you to sleep, makes up to a memorable one that is remembered for years later and you would have something to talk about with your friends. Sometimes its our experiences that makes a movie extraordinary, even if it won the worst category. Of course, good movies with a great story, direction, acting or for any other reason is remembered for hard work, but lets talk about the silliest things that we might have actually enjoyed.
Looking back on my teenage theatergoing heyday, which occurred between the years 1969 and 1972, even fifty years later, the memories remain fresh and intact. From the ages of twelve to sixteen, often solely on my own, I attended 200 Broadway shows over a four-year span. I covered the costs entirely with my own money, too, earned from my paper route delivering Newsday, "the Long Island newspaper." And, yes, at the risk of repeating for those who've heard me mention it before — all at the average cost of $3 a ticket. It's chronicled in my book Up in the Cheap Seats, which tells the stories of an obsessed teenager, eagerly getting an education sadly unaffordable to a kid — or anybody today for that matter — with a shared passion like mine.

AlRawabi School for Girls (2021) had all the making of a teenaged school drama— bullies, toxic environment for young women, lies, scandals, and rich parents— and yet it steered clear from the obvious stereotypes to tell a story as old as time. Including a refreshing angle of empathy, over 6 episodes, the series sparks debates on violence against women, religion, bullying, honour and tradition, psychological issues, and retribution. With each incident, you’re constantly thinking of the consequences of actions; how far can you go to make a point and where does it all end?

The title of the episode posits the question: What if Dr. Strange lost his heart and not his hands? The description lays out the plot: Strange wants to use the Eye of Agamotto AKA the Time Stone to change the past. We can imagine that he probably witnessed the death of Dr. Palmer.
I entered academia to have a reasonable alibi for quitting my second job within three months soon after film school. I went in blind; I was the first generation, post-graduate student, in my family. My grandfather barely had money to finish school (where he met my grandmom) and my parental unit was married off right after they got an undergraduate degree each. As much as they wanted me to study, nobody expected that I’d take the academic route and definitely not after my stint at the film school where my weekends were spent resting my bones after heavy-duty shoots through the week.

A marker of a successful start to any friendship or relationship is the common ground to disliking things together. You can find joy in disliking common friends, films and TV, celebrities, sports. Whatever your grounds may be; there are people who found love in a hopeless place bonding over those, Rihanna made the rules.
The White Lotus is a fantasy away from all the bullshit in the world. For real, the finale dropped at a point in time when historically, the world we live in is facing hard crises—Taliban taking over Kabul, Earthquake in Haiti, blackout in Lebanon, Delta on a fucking trip of its own, global warming…you get the gist. Across nations, the terrible stories have marred our respective lives, and the idea of a vacation at a time like this seems criminal. The only way to subvert this crime (of taking the time off) is to watch the world commit more sins. Checking in at The White Lotus counts as one way.
